Illustration 1 Romans 1 -5 Overview

We also have joyful confidence in present trouble and in God Himself! (Romans 5:3-11)

We have joyful confidence as we look forward to being with God. This is our hope for the future. But we also have joy in the present, even when things are hard for us in this life. We know God is using the trials to make us better. We know God is using the trials to help us grow. How do we know that? Because we know we are loved by God.

When we believed in Christ, God gave us the Holy Spirit as a gift. His Spirit in us helps us know God’s love for us. His Spirit points our hearts back to Christ. He reminds us that Christ died for us when we were ungodly and helpless.

Facts do not change, and we know we are loved because of the fact that Christ died for us when we were still sinners. He did not love us when we were righteous. We were unrighteous! So we know for sure that He has a great love for us. We were not lovable, yet God loved us!

The Holy Spirit helps us realize this in our hearts. He commends God’s love to us. He tells us that God’s love can be trusted! When life is hard, I can look at Christ dying for me to remind myself that God truly loves me.

By God’s Son dying for us, God reconciled us when we were enemies. He brought us back to harmony with Himself. If He did that for us when we were fighting against Him, we can know He is for us today!

And that’s not all! Not only do we have joyful confidence for the future and the present, but we also have joyful confidence in God Himself! God is the One who reconciled us through the Lord Jesus Christ! So really our confidence is in God Himself! God is the One that worked out this salvation!

Someone might think it is boasting to say “I know I am going to heaven.” But I am not boasting in myself by saying that. I am boasting in God! He did it! All I am saying is that I know Christ did all I needed to be right with God! Nothing more is needed. Praise the Lord!

Illustration 1 shows that chapters 1 to 5 are about God’s way of saving us from our legal problem. First, God shows the unrighteousness of all men, whether immoral, moral, or religious. The conclusion is that all are guilty, so all are in danger of wrath.

Second, God reveals the righteousness He provides for men through faith in Christ. The good news is that Christ died for our sins as a substitute, so all people can be justified by faith in Christ. God teaches justification by faith in chapter 3, defends it in chapter 4, and then tells us its results in chapter 5.
