1 Corinthians 3:1-3 – Growing Up & Maturing

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 KJV

Last week we discussed the fact that many Christians are baby christians.

I have taken another week to look at the topic in a bit more detail. The reason being that God does not want us to remain as ‘baby christians’ but He wants us to grow and make progress in our Christian faith. We cross refer in the session to Ephesians 4, Hebrews 5 and 1 Peter 2 to draw some lessons so keep your bible handy.

If you are like me you might feel that this week is a bit like a personal stocktaking and review. I believe that it is good to stop and consider where we are in our walk with God from time to time.

1 Corinthians 3:1-4 – Big Fat Baby Christians

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? 1 Corinthians 3:1-4 KJV

Why do christians squabble sometimes?

Grow up you say! Exactly, this is what the Bible teaches. Christians sometimes are still just big babies. Listen to what Paul has to say about this in this week’s passage.

vlog: 1 Corinthians 2.14-16 Spiritual Discernment

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:14-16 KJV

As we conclude chapter two of 1 Corinthians watch to discover the final piece of Paul’s argument– true spiritual discernment. No one can work God out (without the Spirit of God), no one can work the Christian out and none of us can advise God.

Our understanding changes when we are saved and receive the Spirit of God. Amazing truths from an amazing God!

vlog: 1 Corinthians 2:13 – Spiritual Communication

Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 1 Corinthians 2:13 KJV

How do bible teachers get all that knowledge and the ability to communicate the truth?

A lot of hard work I hear you say! Nights of commitment burning the midnight oil! You are right – all of that and more. The ‘more‘ is the most important bit of the equation. You could study all you like but if you do not walk with God, spend time with God and let the Spirit of God speak through you it will all be a waste.

This latest video teaching blog explains how the Spirit of God equips the bible teacher to teach. I trust that it is helpful.

vlog: 1 Corinthians 2:12 – Spiritual Understanding

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 1 Corinthians 2:12 KJV

You may wonder why the day after you got saved and from then on you began to see and understand things in the Bible that puzzled you before you were a Christian.

While there are lots of things we do not understand in the Bible as Christians, we have one big advantage over unbelievers – the Holy Spirit lives in us and aids us in our spiritual understanding. Watch this video to discover the thrill of how it all works.

vlog: 1 Corinthians 2:9-11 – The Spirit of God Teaches the Christian

But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 2:9-11 KJV

How does God speak to the believer? Watch this installment of our journey through First Corinthians for some answers to this very interesting question.

vlog: 1 Corinthians 2:6-8 – Information for the Initiated

Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 1 Corinthians 2:6-8 KJV

Ever wondered why one person reads the Bible and understands it, yet someone else can’t see what it says?

How is this possible? One is a believer and has the Spirit of God, the other is in darkness and cannot see.

Watch this vblog to see how God communicates truth to His people.

vlog: 1 Corinthians 2:5 – Saving Faith

That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 1 Corinthians 2:5 KJV

You hear people say at times, “I have my faith.” Or others say – “I wish I had your faith.” Again you might hear someone say “as long as we believe something we will be ok.”

Are these statements true or do they just comfort us in our delusional way of thinking? I am not sure what you would say but when I come to the Word of God I find some very specific teaching about this.

I am praying that you will be helped by considering this truth with me.

vlog: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 – The Message and the Messenger

And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 KJV

When you see some preachers preach you would be quite surprised if they told you that they were feeling nervous or inadequate. The modern mindset is to be seen to be confident and capable.

Biblical preaching is quite different!

Paul bares his soul and admits in this section that when he arrived in Corinth that he was feeling weak, he was trembling and fearful. Maybe the closeted atmosphere in which most preaching takes place these days has robbed us of the reality that we are preaching to lost souls who are on the payroll of the enemy. The enemy is real and powerful, the audience can be antagonistic and our own capabilities will not be of any help to us.

The key to understanding the point of 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 is to appreciate the power that lies in the hand of God which will be unleashed through the preaching of His message.

Trust this vblog is a blessing to you.
