Devotional – Spiritual Exile

“And Jeremiah… [said] ‘I am banned from going to the house of the Lord.” Jeremiah 36:5 ESV

Jeremiah was in spiritual exile—banned by his own brethren from entering the house of the Lord! Why? For speaking the truth.

Joseph was sent into exile and slavery by his own brethren! Why? For speaking the truth.

Jesus Christ was rejected and crucified by his own brethren, for He ‘came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.’ John 1:11 ESV. Why? For speaking the truth.

Today, maybe you too are in spiritual exile for speaking the truth—having also been rejected by your own brethren.

Spiritual exile is not a fun place to be, but take heart! You are in very good company. Jeremiah, Joseph, and Jesus were all rejected by those who should have gladly received them and the truth they proclaimed!

Never forget—God not only sees the bigger picture, He sees the entire picture from beginning to end! When rejected by your own, the best example to follow is that of the Lord Jesus Christ, for ‘when he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.’ 1 Peter 2:23 ESV.
