The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” What profit has a man from all his labor in which he toils under the sun? Ecclesiastes 1:1-3 NKJV
And so begins King Solomon’s book of Ecclesiastes with a searching question: “what does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun?” An excellent question, a question that many have asked. Maybe you have asked a similar question about life… “is all of this worth it?” or “work, work, work and then I die?!”
In the book of Ecclesiastes King Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, explores his question with brutal honesty. In the end Solomon comes to the conclusion that life is meaningless if it is lived for the things “under the sun.” But there is hope! And that hope is found above the sun.
What about you? Are you living for those things under or above the sun?

About a year and a half ago Rob Bell, who at that time was the pastor of Mars Hill Bible Church in Grand Rapids, MI, published a book titled “Love Wins”. The book instantaneously became a New York Times bestseller and caused a considerable amount of controversy in the evangelical church and beyond. The book even made the cover of the April 25, 2011 issue of Time Magazine.
As the controversy raged I found myself reading blog posts by both the supporters and detractors of the book. What I read shocked me… the detractors of the book claimed that Rob Bell denied the very existence of a literal hell and that in the end love will “win” — meaning everyone will spend eternity in everlasting bliss.
Could such accusations be true? Could a pastor of an “evangelical” church teach such things? To find out I purchased a copy of the book and read it. What I read in Rob Bell’s book Love Wins astounded me. From my reading of the book it seemed that the book’s detractors had actually understated the severity of doctrinal error!
After studying Love Wins in the light of God’s Word I had the opportunity to speak about it.

Likewise, when the Lord sent you from Kadesh Barnea, saying, ‘Go up and possess the land which I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God, and you did not believe Him nor obey His voice. Deuteronomy 9:23 NKJV
There were giants in the land and the children of Israel, cowering in fear, turned back from the blessings of the Promise Land. They believed the ten spy’s majority report, scoffed at the 2 spy’s minority report, and rebelled against the commandment of the Lord not believing or obeying His voice.
What about us? Will we believe God’s Word and move forward into His blessings? Or will we not believe God nor obey His voice?
